The Chicago River (MP3 Album)

$9.99 USD

Orbert Davis' orchestral composition, performed by Chicago Jazz Philharmonic, inspired by photographs from "The Lost Panoramas: When Chicago Changed its River and the Land Beyond," which documents the historic reversal of the Illinois River at the turn of the 20th Century.

The reversal of the flow of the Chicago River, at the turn of the 19th century, is one of the greatest engineering feats ever undertaken. The river’s new course greatly improved Chicago’s sanitation and public health, but it also had significant consequences on the natural environment and cultural landscape that affect the city to this day.

The five-moment third stream masterpiece was commissioned by and premiered at Chicago's Symphony Center in May 2013. The critically acclaimed piece examines the Chicago River and its reversal as distilled through the beautiful historic photographs featured in Richard Cahan and Michael Williams’s book "The Lost Panoramas: When Chicago Changed Its River and the Land Beyond".
